Mai is the bosomy heroin from the King of Fighter series. I think this version is her KOF '96 outfit, with yellow collars (which I painted white) and the tapered "tail".

I first saw this kit in HJ EX, and the pose allows you to see her backside, so I was eagerly looking for her. But after I've gotten her, over the years I grew less and less fond of P-Unit's style, so I only finished her after a very long time. The problem with P-Unit's style is the very angular body parts and harsh lines, and not-so-great anatomy. The butt area is considerably better sculpted than Yoko's, but still it's not as good as other sculptor's such as K. Piero's. I also don't like the raised relief for the eyebrows, they are really unnatural. If I do it again I'd scrap off the eyebrows and draw my own.

Kit Review

Seam lines: 3/5   Pinholes: 3/5   Casting: 3/5   Fit: 4/5   Part Break: 3/5   Help

The kit has relatively few parts, consider she has a pretty elaborate outfit. The whole lower body was molded in one piece, which makes removing seam lines between legs pretty difficult. The upper body , including the head, is also molded in one piece, and causes similar trouble with seamlines.

Building

A long time ago I tried to use Tamiya grey putty to hide seams, but wasn't very successful. Anyway I couldn't remember how much time I spent removing seams and priming her.

This time I tried a slightly different approach with skintone; I underlaid a very white fleshtone first, and then paint over with a darker one. The overall result is quite pleasing and was less of a headache than my previous fleshtone-on-white approach, though I think the dark fleshtone is a bit too dark (was going for a slightly burnt skin, but didn't succeed) Nothing a few hours of oil painting couldn't fix.

Her original collar strips were yellow, but I mixed it up with her KOF '97 and onward outfit, which has instead white collar, so I painted her collars white. I think I like white better though, the yellow looks a bit out of place since no other parts of her outfit is yellow. But that does make her slightly less colorful.

I also delicated painted her a transparent panties :) Though you can't see it too well with the loin cloth in front.
